Michelle Nazareth: From Sandbox to Stardom
An impressive Startup Sandbox researcher from Kirby School in Santa Cruz struck gold on the science fair circuit.
09 June 2019
It’s so great when our Sandbox residents gain fame with their research. Michelle Nazareth, a high-school student at Kirby School in Santa Cruz and a Startup Sandbox researcher, struck gold on the science-fair circuit this Spring.
Last summer, Michelle performed an internship with Dr. David Deamer, professor of Biomolecular Engineering at UC Santa Cruz. Dr. Deamer introduced her to the Sandbox where Michelle spent five months performing research for her project entitled RNA Regulation: Identifying and Preventing AMP Depurination in Early Life RNA Polymerization.
In her eleventh year of participating in science fairs, Michelle took top prize in the senior division at the Santa Cruz County Science and Engineering Fair. She also won the Plantronics Youth Pathfinder Special Award and the NASA Earth Science Special Award. Her Santa Cruz honors qualified her to enter California’s State Science Fair. In May, she took fourth place honors at the 2019 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix. And if all that isn’t enough, Michelle was recently interviewed by National Geographic for her work.
All of us at Startup Sandbox are so proud of Michelle’s accomplishments and couldn’t be happier to see all of her hard work recognized by the judges.
